resizeEach year the Alma Education and Arts Foundation celebrates Alma graduates with two special programs.

Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Program awards college scholarships to graduates based on financial need and academic potential. The scholarship application opens in the spring each year. This year the application was available online for the first time, and we had more applicants than ever before.

The Foundation awarded more than $100,000 this year for the first time. The amount of scholarships awarded has grown over the years from our first year in 2002 when we awarded $8,000. This tremendous growth is attributed to the generous donations of local businesses and individuals and the success of our public programs.

This year 97 students were awarded a total of $101,700. These students major in all fields and attend colleges across the country. The scholarships were announced and presented at the annual Alma High School Awards Ceremony on May 4, 2015.

Awards Banquet

The Awards Banquet honors Alma graduates who are high achieving in academics, athletics and the arts. Students attending the banquet have either received an ACT score above the state average or have received state recognition in an extracurricular activity. Students are presented with a metal to wear during graduation.

The Foundation also presents two annual awards at the banquet. The Alumni of the Year for 2015 was presented to Heather Lewis. Lewis is a 2005 graduate of Alma High School. She works as a morning anchor for 5NEWS. The Distinguished Service Award for 2015 was presented to Mayor Keith Greene. Mayor Greene is a longtime supporter of the Alma School District and the Foundation. Greene previously worked as a substitute at Alma High School. He and his wife Edna have been Foundation Season Sponsors for many years.

Guest Speaker Wes Kemp spoke to students and families about being a leader. Kemp is the former President and CEO of ABF Trucking. This year we honored 125 seniors at the banquet which was held on May 15 and was catered by the Alma High School Food Services Staff.
